Value-adding board work is challenging both conceptually and in practice. Board membership, therefore, should not be left to chance. In the fourth webinar in the Getting on Board series, Graeme Nahkies discusses how to ensure there is an effective succession planning process in place. He emphasises the following points:

• The importance of getting the ‘right’ people on the board and the different considerations in doing so.
• The many challenges in such a process. For instance, many arts boards have been reliant on ‘volunteers’ to fill available board positions and that is unlikely to change. But a board should not be sitting around waiting for volunteers to appear nor willing to accept just about anyone who is available.
• The importance of ensuring a balance between replenishment and continuity on the board. How to integrate an active process for retaining people with key capabilities and recruiting new members.
